YouTuber, new dad, and self-described oddball who needs to shower more, Beau has been finding ways to satisfy his adventurous spirit both abroad and in his backyard.
Beau Miles is a poly-jobist, Doctor of Philosophy, author, doer and oddball. Described by a YouTube subscriber as ‘a charming adventurer…and certified nut-case’, he also happens to be a multi-award winning filmmaker. With a string of successful short films under his belt, Beau has become known for his offbeat candour, authentic insight, willingness to eat anything off the side of the road and vibrant sense of wonder. Though it is his re-framing of adventure, penchant for self-experiments and unpacking of his own worldview that makes for insightful, inspiring and intriguing storytelling.
Beau recently released his first book: The Backyard Adventurer, to great acclaim. In it, he explores the idea of conscious experimentation with adventure, making meaning and inspiration out of tins of beans, bits of rubbish, elbow grease and backyard spaces. Beau’s exploits are funny, authentic, insightful and now being imitated all over the world by others looking to live inspired lives.
Being offbeat and NQR (Not Quite Right) speaks volumes about how Beau goes about life and represents himself to the world, believing wholeheartedly that we’re all weird.
Beau lives in Gippsland, Victoria, Australia.

The Backyard Adventurer
After years of adventuring around the globe – running, kayaking, hitchhiking, exploring – Beau Miles came back to his block in country Victoria. Staying put for the first time in years, Beau developed a new kind of lifestyle as the Backyard Adventurer.
The Secret Life of the Sea Kayaker
Beau’s PHD investigated the lived experience of sea kayaking as a form of expeditionary practice. The project was positioned as a phenomenological narrative during a 15-day sea kayak crossing of Bass Strait, between the Australian mainland and Tasmania.
